Discovering Ireland (Video Visits released by Questar 2001)
This eighty-five minute video is my favorite Ireland video so far. They go through Ireland in sections giving all of the county names for each section. It has some how it’s made type sections and a little bit of tourist type information but never feels like a chamber of commerce pamphlet.
It covers the whole island including northern ireland, which was a nice change. They talk about the troubles in context, but not in a way that makes it seem like the single defining characteristic of an interesting area.
They hit all of the normal sites plus a few that no other video has covered. There is some useful trivia.
The production has the normal issues with excessively gooey harp music and zoomy shots of panoramas but to a lesser degree than the others of its ilk.
I don’t know if this is coherent because I have had this chest cold thing and I keep coughing. Last night I kept having fits, even after some totally swear to god non-recreational tussin, and after the eighth or ninth fit, my wife actually started crying because she just wanted to sleep. I tried to go sleep on the couch but she wouldn’t let me. Anyway, I am hungover from cold syrup and lack of sleep, but I do like this video.
